Following reports that more than
50 civilians trying to flee by rail from a nearby territory had been killed in
a missile attack the day before, Ukraine encouraged residents in the eastern
Luhansk region to stay away from Russian soldiers amassing.
Air-raid sirens blared over
eastern Ukraine, which has been the focus of Russian military actions in recent
weeks following a retreat from Kyiv-regions.
"They are assembling forces
for an offensive," said Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai in a televised
address, urging civilians to leave shelling that he said had increased in
recent days.
Russia's invasion, which began on
February 24, has displaced over 4 million people, killed or injured thousands,
displaced a quarter of the population, and left towns in ruins.
The civilian deaths have sparked
a wave of worldwide condemnation, particularly over the deaths in Bucha, which
was occupied by Russian forces until last week.
People are being targeted as part
of a "special operation" to demilitarize and "denazify"
Russia's southern neighbor, Russia has denied. Ukraine and Western countries
have slammed this as a phony justification for war.
THE STATION CAUSES THE DEATH OF
FIFTY-TWO PEOPLE.
On Friday, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy
requested a "strong global response" to a missile assault on a
railway station in Kramatorsk, a crossroads for people fleeing the east, which
killed women, children, and the elderly.
As a result of the attack,
blood-stained clothing, toys, and broken bags were strewn about the station's
platform.
According to local mayor
Oleksander Honcharenko, who estimated 4,000 people were present at the time,
the dead toll has risen to at least 52.
The missiles that damaged the
station were only fired by Ukraine's military, according to Russia's defense
ministry, which also stated that Russia's armed forces had no objectives near
Kramatorsk on Friday.
Russia's state television
described the strike as a "bloody provocation" by Ukraine.
According to a senior defense
official in Washington, the US does not believe Russia's denials and believes
Russian forces used a short-range ballistic missile in the strike.
Reuters was unable to corroborate
the incident's details.
Honcharenko estimates that just
50,000-60,000 of Kramatorsk's 220,000 citizens will remain within a week or two
as people flee the violence.
THE EUROPEAN UNITED NATIONS'
SUPPORT
Russian soldiers appeared to have
committed war crimes in Ukraine by targeting civilians, according to European
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who also emphasized that the alleged
cases must be probed by attorneys.
After a visit to Ukraine, von der
Leyen said she witnessed the destruction of Bucha, a town near Kyiv, with her
own eyes on Friday. According to local officials, a forensics team began
exhuming a mass grave containing the bodies of locals killed while Russians
ruled the area on Friday.
"If this isn't a war crime,
what is?" von der Leyen said to reporters as he boarded a train bound for
Ukraine. "However, I am a medical doctor by training, and attorneys must
scrutinize everything," von der Leyen explained.
The Kremlin has persistently disputed
allegations of war crimes, calling tales of Russian soldiers murdering
civilians in Bucha a "monstrous fake."
According to German Chancellor
Olaf Scholz, the perpetrators of civilian killings in Bucha are guilty of war
crimes and must be held accountable..
On Friday, the EU overcame some
divides to enact further measures, including import prohibitions on coal, timber,
chemicals, and other items, as well as the freezing of EU assets owned by
President Vladimir Putin's daughters and other billionaires.
In a video message delivered on
Friday evening, Zelenskiy called on the West to do more, including implementing
an energy embargo and isolating all Russian institutions from the global
financial system.
WAR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO LAST
YEARS.
Moscow, according to the
Ukrainian military, is planning a push to retake complete control of the Donbas
areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, which have been held in part by Moscow-backed
rebels since 2014..
According to a British Defence
Ministry intelligence assessment, air assaults are anticipated to escalate in
the south and east as Russia attempts to build a land bridge between Crimea,
which Moscow took in 2014, and the Donbas, but Ukrainian troops are blocking
the approach.
The Russian military said on
Saturday that an arsenal storage at the Myrhorod Air Base in central-eastern
Ukraine had been destroyed.
The Kremlin stated on Friday that
the operation might be over in the "near future," with the Russian
military and peace mediators achieving their objectives.
The battle, according to NATO
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, might continue months or perhaps years.
